I often find Thug Notes a helpful resource for explaining works of literature. In this case, our thug professor articulates many of the concepts I'd like to explain much better than I can do it. So have a look. I'd also encourage you to look at how the many metaphors he mentions contribute to the overarching theme of this book: that war has such terrible consequences that there is nothing coherent to say about it.
